For quite some time now I have stopped buying stuff! I only buy what I love, here is what I do to (help myself) when shopping for myself or a client, I put in my cart everything I think I love, then as I continue shopping I really look at it and un-shop (put it back) if it does not fit my criteria. It helps me mentally as when I first put it in my cart I "buy" it, so that in its self calms me down, lol and then I make a conscious decision to either keep it or get rid of it. Hope this helps everyone. It did me.

This one really spoke to me...I shared with friends on Face Book! Having this creative gene in me that used to express itself through art, then when the hands could no longer cope, turned into expression through decor ....I have a very hard time committing to a style of decor for very long , all it takes is a new magazine picture, something in a store window, a tv show on HGTV or at times a blog LOL and I am off and running. Redecorating also calms and relaxes me , the whole process of it is like therapy! I get a ribbing from friends and family all the time for changing things nearly right after I say "it's done" and my dear husband has been wonderful at not keeping tally at what money I have spent and wasted and never regained...and soothes me when I have regrets for getting rid of something.

Because our financial standing is at best on shaky ground , rent this month may be an issue due to a week of unemployment and a job change , the money part of your blog has really spoken to me as well. I am really trying to change my mind set and habits as well. I realize I attach too much happiness and joy to what our bank account looks like, and as it is empty right now and we are praying the tax return shows up in time to keep a roof over our heads for another month , I want to let that all go , I NEED to ....but yet it is like cutting off the right arm.....as is not being able to decorate and redecorate....but again I want to and need to work on being committed to something and sticking with it and finding long lasting pleasure and pride in it as well....and still maintain my creative outlet that is such a part of me.

Thanks again for making me CONSCIENCE of what matters.

Alex...Perfect blog for today! I am headed back to Home Goods to take back impulse, emotional band aide purchases. I explained of our situation this past year so you know what I am speaking of. I make this mistake all the time. If it is not an over load of stuff ( man oh man have I had some dandy yard sales, my neighbors used to love when I would change decor or fine tune it) then I eat /bake/cook or I buy clothing ....always consuming never consciously! I am really working on that now ...especially with the limited space of the apartment and I think I am starting to get the feeling for what I want in my space that makes me comfortable and at peace in my surroundings.

Alex. I can really appreciate what you're saying about conscious consumerism. For me, checking in as you suggest, can mean the difference between emotional buying and buying with awareness and intent. Hearing you talk about this kind of consciousness, reminds me that objects have their own energy -- and will affect both my home and my life. I appreciate your insights.

Thanks!

Hi Karen,

Thank you for your input -- that's exactly it! I couldn't have said it better myself!

Love this room! So sophisticated ! I wish I could afford your services to help me fine tune my visions I have of a relaxing, tranquil and spiritual place to live. Had this been a year ago I could have afforded your services and to buy all new things to fulfill the vision . But like many my husband lost his high paying job, then after running through all our savings to try to stay in our dream home, we lost our home as well and are now in a beige box of an apartment and living with a hodgepodge of make due IKEA furniture
( having sold or passed on to our daughter everything to get into the apartment and make it work) and I can only dream and try on a Target/Wal Mart budget to make it livable. So for now after discovering your blog, I shall just dream and keep notes. Keep up the amazing work and well if life ever turns around for us or I win Publishers LOL

Hello Stephanie!

Thank you so much for writing to my blog -- and thank you for the kind words, I only wish I could take the credit! What you've shared is really powerful -- many Americans, and perhaps people all over the world, have experienced exactly what you have. It can be heart-wrenching and maddening to undergo such loss. Not to mention the challenge of getting used to a new way of living. However, I am sending you my words of encouragement -- I truly believe that a true home, a Conscious Home, is more about Who lives in it than what lives in it. I wish you happy nesting as you create a new, healing Home within your re-defined resources. And I secretly hope that a terrific accent paint color is in your future!
